Choosing kitchen cabinets is a major part of the kitchen design or renovation process. Cabinets are the most prominent aspect of your kitchen, so it’s important to be sure that the style, finish, and hardware you choose offer the look you want for your home. At the same time, when designing your kitchen, think about ways to provide accessible, spacious, and organized storage for kitchen tools and food.
There is a lot to consider when you envision your cabinets: material, style, color, surfacing, hardware, space, and accessories (such as a lazy Susan or sliding shelves). The color alone will make a big statement in the overall design of your kitchen. White, for example, creates a spacious appearance and tends to “draw in” other colors. But for many kitchens or homes in general, white won’t be the right choice. So it’s a good idea to learn as much as you can about cabinetry before you buy or even start designing your kitchen. The
National Kitchen and Bath Association says that almost half of the average kitchen remodeling budget will be spent on cabinetry, so it’s important to make the right choices for your home.
The showroom staff at Atherton Appliance & Kitchens stands ready to help you choose the right mix of cabinetry and hardware. At Atherton, we understand that each kitchen is as unique as the client designing it. We offer four distinct cabinetry lines to satisfy a variety of needs and budgets. With the help of these four brands, we can assist in the design of traditional, transitional, and contemporary looks for the kitchen, or the entire home. Visit our showroom and we can give you a tour of the specially selected cabinets we sell.
There are three basic categories for kitchen cabinets: stock, semicustom (modular), and custom. High quality choices are available in all three categories, but custom cabinets – cabinets custom-built by a cabinetmaker using your choice of material (such as maple, cherry, walnut, oak, or other hardwoods) and finish, and cut specifically for the space in your home – tend to be relatively expensive. Stock cabinets come in a wide variety of styles and stock measurements, and are available at most home improvement and kitchen and bath centers. Although these cabinets are usually easiest to afford, you might not be happy with the results – and remember, you’ll have to be satisfied with those results for the life of your kitchen.
Semicustom cabinets, or modular cabinets, are not manufactured by bulk in advance, but are built after an order is finalized. They come in a wider variety of styles, construction materials, and colors than stock cabinets, and are of a higher quality when it comes to material and finishes. Modular cabinets are also easy to install, either by yourself or with the help of a professional. Many of our customers report the same satisfaction with their modular cabinets as they would expect from custom-built cabinetry.
