Our blog often focuses on the many important details related to designing your kitchen. But if you’ve just begun outfitting a new kitchen, or are thinking about renovating an old one, what are the basic appliances you need? What should you think about first?
Two basic factors should be considered in the purchase of any kitchen appliance(s). First, figure out a budget, and stick with expenditures that work for you. Second, think about the environment (and your utility bill). Consider eco-friendly options such as ENERGY STAR models, or appliances designed to save water. Keeping these two basic issues in mind, you’ll need a few basic appliances for a functional kitchen. Following is a list, and the factors you should consider when making your choices:
Ranges: The range, which includes (at the minimum) an oven and cooktop, is the appliance where everything happens. We cook, bake, and warm in ovens, and sauté, boil, and heat on cooktops. We rely on a range for food preparation when it comes to any warm or hot meal.
Many types of ranges are available, and a number of considerations go into choosing the best one for you. Some cooks prefer a gas range (if the proper hookups are available), while others prefer electric. Some are used to cooking and baking in a traditional oven, where others prefer a convection oven, which uses a fan to circulate hot air inside for even browning and faster roasting. Many people feel a self-cleaning function is crucial. Some enjoy extras, such as a built-in griddle on the cooktop.
Before anything else, figure out what size range fits into your kitchen (and how it will be vented). Then, decide if you want to install an electric or gas range, and what type of exterior will work with your décor (stainless steel, for example, or a specific color). Both Atherton Appliance & Kitchens and BSC Culinary offer an extensive selection of brand name ranges. Feel free to stop by our showroom so we can walk you through the process of choosing the right range for you. We also offer separate rangetops and cooktops, as well as wall ovens.
Microwave Ovens: In 2011, you won’t find many kitchens that don’t include a microwave oven. Since their arrival on the scene in the late 1960s, microwave ovens have increasingly earned their status as a kitchen staple. Modern families enjoy the convenience of quick defrosting and warming, as well as speedy cooking. Our showrooms offer countertop, over-the-range, and built-in microwave ovens varying in size and cooking features. You’ll want to consider the best way to conveniently locate a microwave oven in your kitchen (countertop or above the range, for example), the ways you are most likely to use it (to decide on features), and how to match the exterior to the rest of your décor. Our showroom staff will be happy to help.
Refrigerators: The modern American home requires refrigeration for many foods: milk, cheeses, yogurt, and beverages just to start. Freezers are also a staple for storage of everything from ice cream to frozen entrees. As with all kitchen appliances, you have many options when considering a refrigerator. Our showrooms offer classic free standing models, as well as under counter or built-in refrigerators. Optional features include water filters and ice makers, varied exteriors such as stainless steel, cabinet-matching panels, glass doors, and side-by-side or bottom freezers. As with all other appliances, consider size, décor, and budget when choosing your refrigerator. And of course, consider ENERGY STAR models.
Dishwashers: Although a dishwasher isn’t as essential as a range or refrigerator, and perhaps even a microwave oven, most modern cooks enjoy access to this appliance. Surprisingly, dishwashers often use less water – and do a better job – than hand washing. And there’s no denying the convenience they provide.
We offer many premium brand dishwashers, such as Aga, Bosch, Miele, and Viking. Variations include built-in, standalone and portable models, as well as models designed to be installed under the sink. Some models adjust water pressure, temperature, and speed to each load, or offer other special features such as glass care technology, steam cleaning, and rinse and drying options. Exterior finishes also vary. As always, choose a dishwasher that matches your needs, the size of your space and your décor, and that fits into your overall budget. Many dishwashers have both energy efficient and water-saving features.
In addition to these kitchen basics, Atherton Appliance & Kitchens and BSC Culinary offer expanded categories of appliances, such as wine storage units, ventilation, coffee systems, trash disposals, and appliances designed specifically for outdoor kitchens.
