Everyone wants the best subwoofer possible, but not everybody knows which one qualifies as best for their unique needs. Although most soundbars and HTIB systems are designed to include subwoofers, they oftentimes do not measure up to users’ needs. Not only can a good subwoofer improve audio fidelity, but they also allow you to feel the penetrating power of the bass sound.
Here are a few tips to help you select the right subwoofer.
Can You Upgrade
To begin, you must determine if it is possible to upgrade. If your wired subwoofer has just one cable attached to it, or your device has audio outputs, it may be possible to use a subwoofer. If you are unsure, contact manufacturers, subwoofer experts, review owner’s manuals or search the internet for more information.
Define Wattage Power Needs
Many people mistakenly believe that high-performance subwoofers must always be set at louder volumes. That is not true. Whether you choose high-powered or low-powered subwoofers, you are always in charge of the volume. However, do use caution when looking at subwoofers with fewer than 100 watts, even in small rooms.
Consider the Size
The size of your room largely determines the size of your subwoofer. Generally, the bigger the subwoofer box, the more sound you are likely to get. Although small-sized subwoofers can sometimes work in small rooms, most of the time it’s wise to choose larger subwoofers with a lot of power or even several subwoofers in various locations. Although there are no rules, a 12-inch, over 100-watt subwoofer may be a good minimum starting point for regular sized rooms.
Positioning Matters
When purchasing a subwoofer, keep in mind that where you place it in your room can make a huge difference in how it performs. For example, placing the subwoofer next to a wall or in a corner will increase volume. You can also try moving subwoofers to various locations in your room to discover what works best.
Equalization Processing
Certain brands of subwoofers come equipped with EQ equalization processing, a feature which allows users to adjust frequencies. Although this feature has merits, it won’t completely fix the qualities of an inferior subwoofer or correct poor placement.
Talk to Experts
Since it will pay off in the long run to carefully select a subwoofer that is right for you, it is a good idea to talk with subwoofer experts and read online comparisons and reviews. After all, bass is probably the most important sound in any home audio system and the subwoofer is responsible for making bass come to life.
