
Misty Haji-Sheikh
Misty Haji-Sheikh announces that she is running for the office of Mayor of DeKalb. Misty is presently serving on the DeKalb County Board. In her role, she has been the Chairperson of the Health and Human Services Committee and is the current Vice-Chair of the Economic Development Committee. For the past two years, she was also a member of the DeKalb County Board Executive Committee. She is presently serving on the Forest Preserve Committee and previously she has been a member of the DeKalb County Board Finance Committee. She believes in maintaining a balanced budget and hasn’t been afraid to make cuts when necessary. She is one of the people that helped start DeKalb County’s Business Incubator. She has helped close out Evergreen Village and is helping turn that property into the new Sycamore Forest Preserve. She created Pedal Pal, a free County program that helps business and bicyclists. A business simply offers the cyclist a bathroom, water, and use of a phone in case of emergency and in return the County promotes their business and website. This was done with zero tax dollars.
She is currently a Regional Planning Commissioner and is the Vice President of the Regional Planning Commission. The Regional Planning commission is a group of Mayors, City Managers and City Planners of all of the cities and townships in DeKalb County. She is on the Regional Nursing Home Board of Directors. The Regional Nursing Home has gone from a 4-star rating to a 5-star rating (the only 5-star nursing home in a 50-mile range) while she has been on their board, and she is working on the expansion of the nursing home to improve services. She is an alternate member of the Northwest Regional Planning Water Alliance. The Northwest Regional Planning Water Alliance is composed of Mayors, City Managers of DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry Counties. She has served for six years on the TAILS Board of Directors and several years the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra Board of Directers and helped start DeKalb County Community Gardens. She is a member of Kishwaukee Kiwanis.
She has a BA from the University of Texas at Arlington and is currently taking graduate classes at Northern Illinois University. She has management experience. She worked for the University of Texas at Arlington (27,000 students) for ten years and leading the university postal service. She is currently self-employed. She and Michael, her husband of 32 years, raised two kids in DeKalb. Both who are now attending college. Her husband is a professor of Electrical Engineering at Northern Illinois University.
