The Horticulture department at Kishwaukee College will be holding their Annual Plant Sale on Friday, May 6, from 7:30a.m. – 2:00p.m. in the Greenhouse located on the north side of campus. Plant Sale participants should enter campus using the North (B) entrance on Malta Road. Parking is limited but there will be a loading area available by the Greenhouse and horticulture students and staff to assist patrons with loading their purchases.
The Annual Plant Sale includes annuals, perennials, zonal geraniums and large specialty annuals. There are also pre-planted containers of various sizes and hanging baskets, as well as high quality potting soil available for purchase.
Of particular interest this year are the large selections of vegetables. B.J. Miller, Greenhouse/ Gardens Technician, explained, “Due to great germination rates, we have a large offering of vegetables, including 21 varieties of peppers – something for every taste: sweet bell, hot, fresno, banana, goat horn, grillers – and some unusual varieties like Hot Sunset, Flavorburst, Sweet Habanero, and 2016 All-American Selection Variety called Cornito Gaillo. We also have 16 varieties of tomatoes – heirloom, early, miniature, canning, colorful, beefsteak, grape, cherry, and again some unusual varieties including Chef’s Choice Orange, Big Yummy, Heirloom Marriage Genuine, and Organic Cherokee Purple. The veggies’ price remains the same as it has for the past 12 years: $1.00!”
This year’s herb selection includes the traditional favorites such as basil, oregano, cilantro, chives, and varieties of parsley, but will also feature herbs such as stevia, lemon grass, and fennel.
The Kishwaukee College Horticulture staff will be on site during the sale to assist patrons and answer gardening and/or planting questions and will also assist with choosing plants suited to specific needs or wants.
