The first Boy Scout Troops were established in the United States in 1910 and DeKalb, Illinois was not far behind. Troop 4, chartered by the First United Methodist Church since 1925, and is the oldest continually chartered Boy Scout Troop in DeKalb and one of the oldest in Illinois.
Founded by Robert Baden-Powell, a Lieutenant General in the British Army, he served in Africa in 1896 and was inspired by both his experiences and comrade Frederick Russell. In 1906, Powell penned a book for boys about reconnaissance and scouting, called Scouting for Boys. The intent was to support young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development so that they play constructive roles in society. Today, many of the original practices and lessons which are also derived from Native Americans are still employed to educate boys in basic woodworking, survival, exploration and most importantly civic duty.
This year, Troop 4 will celebrate their 90th year as a continually chartered Boy Scout Troop. Though some records have been lost over the years, it is assured that thousands of boys have actively participated and grown up in Troop 4. Just shy of 100 years of creek beds, canoes, tents, camp fires, community projects and friendship.
If you are a former member of Troop 4 or related family, they invite you to join them once again on September 19th, from 1-4pm at theFirst United Methodist Church, 321 Oak St. in DeKalb, to share your stories and experiences with the current Scouts!
