Jared Bunge from Boy Scout Troop 2810 (chartered out of Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore) is conducting a Book Drive for the Kindergarten through 8th Grade reading levels to benefit the students of West Elementary School in Sycamore. This book drive is a significant part of Jared’s Eagle Scout Project.
“I chose this project because Mrs. Currie (a former Principal of West School) was my favorite educator. She was a huge literacy advocate at West School. Mrs. Currie passed away shortly after her retirement. I wanted to honor her by doing something she’d be proud of and something that would help West School students. West School has a large proportion of students on ‘free and reduced lunch programs’ so giving them books of their own will mean a lot to them and help them become better readers”, said Jared.
Eagle Scout projects require leadership, planning and implementation. Jared is applying some of the skills he recently acquired while attending B.S.A. “National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience” (NAYLE) training at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.
Jared would like to see the community rally behind this worthy cause. His goal is to provide at least one book to each student at West Elementary School this Fall. The book distribution event will also include cookies, lemonade and a 30 minute reading session at the school. Additionally, Jared is building a bookshelf for the school’s library to feature “staff favorites” to further encourage literacy at West. The bookshelf will include a plaque honoring Mrs. Currie and donated by Sweet Earth of Sycamore.
New and gently used books may be dropped off at the main office of any Sycamore School District Elementary School (e.g North, North Grove, South Prairie, Southeast or West), Sycamore Middle School or Sycamore High School. The book drive runs from August 19th through September 25th, 2015. Please donate new or gently used books today!
