Plan to come out for “Make Our Garden Grow,” a concert of Broadway music performed by NIU Choruses, DeKalb and Sycamore High School Choruses, DeKalb Festival Chorus, Penguin Project and Stagecoach Players. This community event will be this Saturday, February 7th, 2015 beginning at 7pm at the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall at NIU.
The event was initiated by Dr. Eric Johnson, Director of Choral Activities as a free concert for the entire community and a benefit for the DeKalb County Community Gardens, with its new project, the Walnut Grove Vocational Farm, which will be a training center for disabled persons.
Goals of the event are:
- Showcase the power of music to unite university and community forces to improve our world
- Celebrate the strengths of the musical culture of DeKalb and Sycamore communities
- Raise awareness of the needs of food instability and hunger in DeKalb County
- Highlight the amazing work of DCCG to feed and educate citizens of DeKalb County.
- Raise funds to support the implementation of the Walnut Grove farm; a place for those with special needs, and those without, to come together in an integrated and nourishing environment for agriculture-and horticulture-based training and employment.
Boutell Memorial Concert Hall is located at 300 Lucinda Ave, DeKalb. The performance is co-sponsored by the NIU School of Music, Kish Health Systems, NB & T, The Suter Company, DeKalb County Farm Bureau. Supporters: Live Healthy DeKalb County, Tapa La Luna, Kishwaukee Family YMCA, and Sweet Dreams Bakery.
