PARKSIDE PRESERVE
Another large park in Sycamore is Parkside Preserve. With three ponds, open fields and a trail, this park site has a bright future. Currently, the shorelines of the ponds are under restoration as they were originally planted with turfgrass which does a poor job of holding the shoreline. Therefore, the park district has hired a local company, ENCAP, to restore the shorelines and plant native prairie species which are deep-rooted, deter geese, hold the shoreline, filter runoff of herbicides/pesticides/fertilizer from neighboring fields/yards which reduces algae blooms, and encourages the return of a broader range of birds and butterflies. Much of the park land is currently planted by a farmer as it is in a flood plain and is not highly suitable for “active” park features like a playground, pavilion, basketball/tennis courts, etc.
