Rockfest at Shabbona Lake State Park has been rescheduled to Feb 22nd 2014 due to the weather. Pokanokas will be closed Sat Feb 1st due to the weather. Lakeside will be open if they can make it there in the morning.
The tradition of adding more strategically placed rock habitat will continue this Saturday February 1, 2014 . Rockfest is organized by the Shabbona Lake Sportsman Club with help from many other area fishing clubs. During the past 13 years over 1000 tons of added rock have made a great impact on the fishery.
The group on Saturday will create a new pile in the Southwest bay on top of an old gravel road, that has been approved by the Biologist. Normally this event is finished around noon and a nice cookout is provided for all. That leaves time to do some ice fishing before sunset.
Shabbona Lakeside staff encourages the many fishing clubs that fish Shabbona to bring a group out and lend a hand. Nothing is better than seeing what the Rockpiles look like and knowing exactly where they are. The Rock is placed thru large holes cut in the ice so there is no movement on floating ice. Bring your GPS to mark the spots if you’d like.
They are also are in need of people with all terrain vehicles (ATV’s) . Large rock is loaded by tractor onto plywood sleds that are pulled by the ATV’s over the holes where they are dumped. The more ATV’s on hand, the faster the event will go. ATV’s are allowed for this event only.
Sportsmen will meet at 8 30am Saturday in the parking lot near Lakeside Bait n Tackle, 100 Preserve Rd., in Shabbona. Check Shabbona lake.com for any last minute changes. Contact Rich McElligott 815 824 2523 or mclgot1@aol.com if you can bring your ATV. You can also let them know ahead of time at the bait shop.
