The Genoa Open Air Market truly has something for everyone this Saturday, September 28th, 2013, except maybe cats. Fresh produce, specialty foods, crafts, new and antique items and live entertainment are not the only things visitors will find. Two crowd favorites, “Dogs Day Out” and “Build your own Scarecrow” return to entertain visitors on two feet or four.
“Dogs Day Out is back by popular demand,” says Gene Bradford, Event Chairman for Genoa Main Street, Inc. “I guess the dogs have been begging to come back downtown.”
The dogs and their owners will find lots to do. All dogs will receive a treat just for coming. Children are welcome to bring a stuffed dog. Prizes will be awarded to dog and human winners of several contests. The dog costume contest is for real or stuffed dogs in costume. Humans can compete for best human dressed as a dog (children or adults) and best dog howl by a human. Dogs can take a dip at “dog beach”.
If Dogs Day Out isn’t for you, or even if it is, you can try your hand at building a scarecrow. Genoa Main Street, Inc. provides everything needed, from a frame and head to stuffing and clothes. Both adult and child size scarecrows will be available. The cost is $20 per scarecrow and all proceeds benefit downtown projects and events.
“Building a scarecrow together is a fun family tradition,” says Diane Helland, Main Street board member and scarecrow organizer. “Kids love choosing a face and an outfit for the scarecrow. You can build the scarecrow at the market or pack up the parts and take them home to build later.”
Genoa’s Open Air Markets are the largest in the area, attracting crowds to the location at the corner of Main (Rt. 72) and S. Genoa Streets in downtown Genoa. Merchants offer sidewalk sales on market days and market visitors receive stickers making them eligible for special offers in downtown shops. The markets are sponsored by KishHealth System and National Bank & Trust.
Market spaces are available at $25 per space. Lower rates are available for non-profit organizations and fresh produce sellers. Tents and tables can also be rented. For information on the day’s activities or to reserve a space, call 815 784-6961, email mainstreetgenoa@gmail.com or go to genoamainstreet.com. Genoa Main Street, Inc. is a donation supported non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving downtown Genoa.
