Why do black cats and dogs seem to stay in shelters longer than those of other colors? We’re not sure if anyone has the definitive answer but TAILS Humane Society wants that to change with their annual “Change Their Luck” promotion during the month of October.
“During the spring, summer and fall, when we’re inundated with kittens, the adult cats have a tough time competing for the attention of potential adopters,” said Beth Drake, TAILS’ Executive Director.
“Maybe it’s because of the superstitions surrounding black cats or perhaps black cats don’t show up as well in their cage or colony. Whatever the reason, adult black cats are some of the most challenging to find homes for. It’s through no fault of their own though, some of our nicest kitties are completely black and all our adoptable pets deserve homes,” she continued.
There are almost two dozen black, adoptable adult cats at the TAILS shelter in DeKalb and they are just as adoptable, just as lovable and just as deserving of Forever Homes as every other animal in the shelter. Maybe it takes special people to see this and those are the people TAILS invites to come into the shelter and get to know cats like Katie, Mugsy, Paddington, Salem or Jackson.
How much does TAILS want these cats to find loving homes? A lot! The adoption fee for black cats six months and over will be waived for the month of October. That means the adopter can go home with a cat that’s already spayed or neutered, is current on vaccines, has tested negative for any communicable diseases and a gets free vet visit to boot.
Drake asks that people please visit the TAILS website, www.tailshumanesociety.org, or TAILS campus at 2250 Barber Greene Road in DeKalb to learn more about these colorful and soon-to-be lucky cats!
