World Mental Health Day was celebrated on Thursday, October 10, 2019. This day was created to make more people aware of mental health concerns worldwide. This day also encourages people to become more concerned with mental health issues and the effects it has on people.
As reported in various journals, every year one in four adults and one in ten children will be diagnosed with some type of mental illness. More importantly, the challenges of these people affect tenfold the number of family members and friends. Sadly, the stigma of someone with mental illness is not understood or embraced by those that know the person. In many cases, people with mental illness are not identified until the problems become more severe, which for some is too late. Too often people with various levels of mental health do not seek treatment, hide their problems or become a recluse.
Mental Health professionals encourage all citizens to look for a change in behavior from those friends and family members that take on a variety of strange behaviors. Many professional health groups and organizations provide literature for the causes and effects of mental illness.
This year the recognition of how mental illness affects suicide is part of the awareness program. Every 40 seconds someone commits suicide around the world, and for a great number of people this event was a shock to friends and family.
