Waterman resident Beverly Z. Gainey, (DOB 1/24/36) was traveling south on Rt. 23 north of Elva Road at about 5:07pm Monday evening, March 24th, when her car drove off the right (west) side of the road. The van struck the end of a guardrail and then flipped onto the passenger side and began sliding on the grass. The van then struck a culvert and came to a stop before sliding into the creek.
The driver was unconscious upon arrival of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department. The DeKalb Fire Department extricated her from the van and transported her to KCH with life threatening injuries. She was wearing a seat belt and air bags deployed.
An investigation showed no cause for her going off the roadway. Speed and cellphone use were ruled out as causes. The crash is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb County coroner’s Office.
Beverly Gainey was pronounced deceased at Kishwaukee Hospital late Tuesday night as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident.
