The DeKalb Forest Preserve will be holding ‘Winterfest 2010’ in Genoa this Saturday, January 15th. Enjoy the annual outdoors event with your family this Saturday at the Natural Resource Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve. The event is free and open to the public.
Winterfest starts at 9 a.m. Saturday with a bird behaviors and identification session, where families can learn techniques for how to identify birds by their adaptations and behaviors. Starting at the same time is the ongoing craft session where kids can make and take home their homemade projects.
After the bird-watching session, families can go on a hike with staff members through Russell Woods, which begins at 10 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., kids can participate in a fire-making session, where they can learn how Native Americans started fires using a bow drill and tinder. A rope-making session is also offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where kids can learn how rope pioneers made rope. From 10 a.m. to noon, families can make hand-dipped candles.
Staff will be reading the “The Mitten” by children’s author Jan Brett at 2 p.m. Phil Nielsen of Waterman will also be providing horse-drawn wagon rides from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day will wrap up with a final family hike through the woods beginning at 3:30 p.m. The local Prairie Gems 4-H Club from Genoa will be selling lunch and snack items from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as a club fundraiser.
While the event is free, any donations are accepted. Typically, donations help the Natural Resource Center break even for the cost of the event. The Natural Resource Center in Russell Woods is located 1 mile west of Genoa on Route 72. For more information, visit the County’s website here.
