Winter Home Maintenance Checklist

The forecast for the rest of this week is declining temperatures and damp, and maybe even snowflakes by the end of the week. It doesn’t matter if you hate the chilly weather or embrace it, winter is quickly approaching. Winter is just around the corner and it is time to get the outside of your house in shape for the cooler months ahead. 

Check the Fireplace and Chimney

If you use your fireplace, have it cleaned by a chimney sweep. You should also check for any debris and cracks in the chimney. Creosote buildup and debris such as leaves and bird nests could become a fire hazard.

Clean and Check Gutters

After leaves have fallen, clean out the gutters and downspouts, flush them with water, inspect joints, and tighten brackets if necessary. Clogged gutters are one of the major causes of ice dams and roof damage.

Shut Off Outside Water

Turn off outside water valves and drain any hoses. Severe cold can crack pipes and hoses leading to the outside.

Trim Dead Tree Branches

Dead and low hanging tree branches can cause damage from ice storm buildup and can break off and damage the house.

Bird Baths and Fountains

Drain and clean dry all fountains and birdbaths. If you have a winter birdbath that is heated make sure it is clean and ready. Note: Winter Birds do need fresh water.
