Sundog opened in 1989 as a startup called TBC, providing general IT services in DeKalb. By 1995, they could see the potential of universal internet access and became the first commercial internet service provider in DeKalb County. In less than ten years, they had grown from two friends in a basement to a team of twenty in a six thousand square foot office.
With the internet infrastructure in place, they decided to shift their focus solely on delivering outstanding IT services, allowing them to enjoy year over year growth, hire an incredible team, and build an amazing community.
Sundog’s CEO, Cohen Barnes, is a committed runner, even in the harsh Northern Illinois winters. On a freezing morning run in 2012, he encountered the atmospheric phenomenon known as a sundog, where ice crystals refract sunlight to form bright, colorful patches on either side of the sun. He and his team were looking for a new name for the company. “It seemed like a sign,” says Barnes.
Barnes and Rena Cotsones are heading up a program called DeKalb County University and Neighbors Investing Together for Economic Success. It is a small business task force aimed at connecting residents to accessible ways to help support small businesses suffering from continued COVID-19 related closures.
They are working with local chambers of commerce, the DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation, the DeKalb County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and representatives from government agencies. Their mission is to encourage people to buy local, sell local, and eat local.
