Kristen Myers
Kristen Myers, a professor of sociology and director of Women’s Studies at Northern Illinois University, will present a multimedia lecture titled, “Mean Girls, Manly Boys: Anti-feminist Messages in Kids T.V.” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in Room 315 of Altgeld Hall.
Myers, a 2014 Presidential Teaching Professor, focuses her research on privileges and disadvantages, and has explored these themes in several specific topics, including race, gender, and sexual orientation.
Titles of her work include, “Anti-feminist Messages in American Television Programming for Young Girls” (Journal of Gender Studies), “Racetalk: Racism in Plain Sight” (New York: Rowman & Littlefield), “Officer Friendly and the Tough Cop: Gays and Lesbians Navigate Homophobia and Policing” (Journal of Homosexuality), and “Ladies First: Race, Class and the Contradictions of a Powerful Femininity” (Sociological Spectrum).
Her lecture is held in conjunction with the NIU Art Museum’s current exhibition, “Manly Men, Girly Girls, and Everybody in Between.” The show, which closes Saturday, Nov. 15, features 10 contemporary artists whose work explores the gender continuum including expressions of what gender means and the expectation of each gender.
