Summer is here, and you may have a family vacation planned. Need a place for your dog to stay while you’re away? Here’s what you can expect from a boarding experience at Huckleberry’s Pet Parlor.
BEFORE THE STAY:
Reserve:
Call (815) 899-3435 as soon as possible to ensure availability and to reserve a suite for your dog. They sometimes book up to three weeks in advance, especially in the summer and around holidays.
Registration:
Complete the registration form on their website. This will save time at drop-off. Please include an emergency contact on your registration form, especially if you will be traveling and may not be able to be reached.
Vaccinations:
For the safety of your dog and others, they require proof of current vaccinations for rabies, distemper, and bordetella (kennel cough,) as well as proof of a negative fecal result within the last year.
WHAT TO PACK:
Food:
They require that owners provide their dog’s food at drop-off so that the dog continues the diet that they are accustomed to; sudden change in diet is not healthy for pets. Before arrival, please ensure that you have provided enough food to last your dog’s entire stay. It doesn’t hurt to pack some extra food, too, in case your travel plans are delayed or changed.
If you give your pet a nightly treat, pack that, too! (However, for safety reasons, they do not allow rawhide chews.)
Medication – If needed:
They can give oral medications during your dog’s stay. Please bring the medication in the original bottle, and provide instructions, such as how much, how often, and how you administer, i.e. on food, in peanut butter. Please let them know what medical conditions your dog has.
Bedding- Optional:
They provide blankets and a Kuranda dog bed. In order to keep their boarding facility a healthy environment, they ask that you keep large dog beds at home. Some alternatives of home comforts can be a shirt with your scent on it, or a favorite blanket that is machine washable.
Please make sure all personal belongings are clearly labeled with your dog’s name. They are not responsible for any lost or damaged items.
Toys- Optional:
Pack durable toys, and label them with your dog’s name.
AT DROP-OFF:
You will be asked to confirm paperwork and sign a waiver. They encourage you to call during your dog’s stay if you have any questions or if you would like to check in.
DURING YOUR DOG’S STAY:
Dogs are boarded in a 4’ x 6’ suite, with four let-outs per day. This includes a brief walk in our fenced-in yard, and time to go potty at 6 a.m., 12 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Feedings are offered at 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily, and if your dog requires a lunch, they are happy to give one at 12 p.m.
If you signed up for “extras,” such as additional treats or one-on-one fetch time, these will be offered during these time periods.
For more information or to reserve a stay for your dog, please call (815) 899-3435. Please visit their website to learn more about their services and to see photos of their boarding suites.
