For the past 28 years the Beth Fowler Dance Company has built a great reputation for its high energy dance productions. A variety of dance styles from beautiful ballet to today’s hip hop will entertain audiences of all ages this weekend at the Egyptian Theatre. Audience members will feel caught up in the stories that will be told through dance as “Annie” and “West Side Story” will end the show with theatrical fun!
West Side Story, Annie, & More! Will be staged by the Beth Fowler Dance Company and School of Dance at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 North Second Street, DeKalb. Performances will be Friday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, June 11 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. “West Side Story,” a 1950’s version of “Romeo and Juliet,” will be presented as a lyrical ballet.
The story is told with a back drop of New York street scenes depicting the opposing forces of two street gangs, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. The conflicts and rivalry of the gangs are complicated when Maria, sister of Shark leader, Bernardo, meets Tony, leader of the Jets. They fall in love, with tragic results.
Artistic Director Beth Fowler collaborated with staff teacher/choreographers Tamara Newquist and Bret Hamilton to present dynamic choreography, very representative of the original style as seen in the movie version.
The roles of Maria and Tony will be danced by company member Zoë Hamilton of DeKalb, and guest artist Joey Hernandez of Beloit. Featured as Bernardo in the Friday performance will be Clayton Greenlee of Kingston and Chad Newquist on Saturday and Sunday. Company member Hannah Smith of Huntley will perform as Bernardo’s girlfriend, Anita.
Included in the production will be excerpts from the Spanish Ballet “Paquita” and dance highlights of “Annie.” A variety of jazz, hip hop, lyrical, tap, and creative dance pieces will also be presented.
Tickets will cost $20 for adults and $15 for children. Tickets are available at www.egyptiantheatre.org, or by calling (815)758-1225. Tickets will also be available at the theatre box office one hour before each performance. Beth Fowler School of Dance is DeKalb County’s Largest Dance school.
