“This is not American Idol and it’s not America’s Got Talent,” said Kirkland mayor and emcee, Les Bellah, “This is…”
“Picking in the Park!” roared the crowd of more than 200 music lovers at Franklin Township Park in Kirkland.
Dave Guzzardo, Jim Pasko, Larry Wallace, Ed Smith, Jerry Keating, and others treated an appreciative audience to a summer night of bluegrass, gospel, country and rock and roll music. There was nothing fancy. Everyone brought their lawn chairs. Food and refreshments were available with proceeds going to the Joe McGuan Scholarship fund. A 50/50 raffle raised a few hundred bucks for the Northern Illinois Veterans Memorial.
Bellah worked his way through the audience, probably visited with everyone in the park. He was politicking but not for an office. He was selling Kirkland.
“Good to see you. Glad you could make it,” said Bellah when he stopped at our lawn chairs. “What you are witnessing here is the jewel of DeKalb County.”
For a Wednesday evening under the stars it doesn’t get much better.

Gracie and Mac….Thank you both so much for sharing your Wednesday evening with the Village of Kirkland!! We had a great time and I couldn’t be happier with the turnout. People from as far away as Elgin were here. The musicians who were here were all supburb!!! All I needed to do was simply ask for their help…and you saw the results. Again…I am made very proud for the caring and sharing of just plain ‘ol folks!!! Thank you to all who continue to make “Pickin’ In The Park” , the success it is….ewwwwwwhaw!!!!
