Keep Warm and Safe This Winter Season
While DeKalb enjoys the diversity of four distinct seasons, our winters can produce extreme temperatures. At times, weather conditions may pose a threat to health and safety. Bitter cold temperatures are more than an inconvenience; they pose a serious threat to health and safety.
Protect Yourself and Family:
•Wear several layers of loose, warm clothing
•Keep your head, hands, and feet covered when outdoors
•Avoid alcoholic beverages
•Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia: stiff muscles, shivering, puffy or swollen face, cold skin, slow breathing and mental confusion
•Never use an extension cord with a space heater. Ovens should not be used to heat homes

Warming Centers
Warming Centers are heated facilities where any resident can go during periods of extreme cold temperatures to stay warm and safe. Agencies that volunteer their facilities as Warming Centers work to make visitors comfortable.
The below buildings are available as Warming Centers during their normal operational hours.

If the above Warming Centers are closed, Hope Haven is a no turn away shelter. Hope Haven is located at 1145 Rushmore Drive in DeKalb.

•Locate a Warming Center
•Request a well-being check for someone who may be suffering from extreme weather.

Call 815-748-2070 during the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and 815-748-8460 after hours to:
•Report inadequate heat in a residential building
•Resolve a heating problem with your landlord. Landlords must heat residential buildings to at least 65degrees during the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. and 60 degrees during other hours, per City of DeKalb Municipal Code Chapter 13.
