On Tuesday on the Northern Illinois University campus, U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood addressed a wide variety of issues, such as the tariff war between the U.S. and China, Democrat and Republican gridlock in Washington, D.C., and border detention centers problems.
Underwood also addressed the sad state affairs for Higher Education. She called the current state of student loans “predatory” and commented that she hopes to make basic higher education an affordable opportunity for everyone.
Underwood said recent budget cuts at the state and federal level for higher education institutions have unfairly placed a financial responsibility on students and families to be able to pay their education. Underwood said she hopes the Higher Education Act will include Pell grants that will reflect a better vision on the future cost of college, so students don’t have student loans that will be difficult to pay back and maintain a certain lifestyle once in the workplace. She did not offer any information on how to provide financial assistance for college students in the future.
While addressing a room full of college students and other NIU officials Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, also addressed the issues for better gun laws and additional health care reforms. She feels as a Democrat in a traditionally Republican area, she continues to have challenges but will continue to support her issues by listening to the voters.
