According to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, a Cortland patrol officer was flagged down about 9:50pm Thursday to 11 E. Railroad in Cortland for assistance in a domestic dispute. The officer entered the house to a struggle and observed Michael L. Sebourn with a handgun as he began firing rounds. Aaron Sebourn (18) and his mother Trina (45) were removed from the home by the officer. Aaron was treated and released at Kishwaukee Community Hospital for a grazing wound to his shoulder. Trina was transferred to a Rockford hospital with a pelvic wound.
A four-plus hour standoff ensued with attempts to contact Michael Sebourn from between 10pm until 2:15am. At that time the sheriff’s office’s special operations team entered the home where they found Sebourn lifeless from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. DeKalb County Coroner, Dennis Miller, pronounced him dead at 3am.
Authorities believe Sebourn (46) had lived in the Cortland home until he and his wife separated about two years ago. His last known address was Redfield, Ark. Sebourn was allegedly waiting in the house for his wife and son to arrive.
