NIU has good news for student leaders, civically engaged individuals and anyone wishing to enhance their communication and critical thinking skills.
As part of the university’s effort to foster student engagement and career success, the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning (OSEEL) and Student Affairs and Enrollment Management will host training programs this fall that foster collaborative learning and growth.
The first, led by the Center for Civic Reflection, brings individuals together to discuss and relate a piece of literature or media to their civic engagement experiences.
Participants are trained as civic reflection facilitators capable of leading meaningful and strengthening dialogue around campus or in the community. They also gain a deeper understanding of their personal values and renewed insight on civic actions and life.
Training sessions are scheduled from noon to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, with lunch provided, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, with breakfast provided.
. The deadline is Monday, Sept. 1. Email kolson6@niu.edu for more information.
Second on September’s agenda is Dialogue on Diversity.
Launched in 2007 by Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, the program engages students in conversations about culture. The division offers the opportunity annually for NIU students, faculty and staff to participate in a free training to become certified facilitators. Facilitators can then use the knowledge and resources to help empower undergraduate students to think critically about diversity, equity, and social justice.
Some of the areas covered in the training include learning key concepts and frameworks in diversity education, workshop curriculum development and building facilitation skills and strategies.
Introductory training sessions are planned from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19. Participants need to attend only one session.
Applications are available online. Email ssimpson3@niu.edu for more information.
