The 18th annual production of “The Nutcracker” by Beth Fowler Dance Company will be performed at DeKalb’s historic Egyptian Theatre at 7:00 P.M. this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 9th and 10th and 2:00 P.M. December 10th and 11th.
Artistic Director Beth Fowler said, “The audience will enjoy many new surprises in this year’s production. Several new scenes, solos and characters have been added this year to showcase the talents of the growing dance company.”
The newly created character of the Christmas Fairy waves a magic wand that causes magical Christmas visions to appear that tell the story.
Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet tells the story of Clara receiving a toy soldier nutcracker on Christmas Eve. The Nutcracker comes to life in Clara’s dream, defeats the Rat King and turns into a Prince. He escorts her on a wondrous journey through a snowy forest to the Land of the Sweets. They meet the Sugar Plum Fairy and others who entertain with delightful dances.
The role of the Christmas Fairy will be performed on Friday and Sunday by company member Molly Smith and on Saturday by company member Hannah Smith, who is the current reigning Miss Illinois.
Featured company dancers are Brooke Fowler as Clara, Miranda Simek as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Zoe Hamilton as the Snow Queen. Guest artists are Brian Conner of NIU as the Nutcracker Prince and Ryan Kane of NIU as the Snow King. Larry Pool will perform with Beth Fowler as Arabian Coffee.
Company dancers will perform solo roles and in the corps de ballet. Dancers from the Beth Fowler School of Dance will perform the children’s roles. Choreography is by Artistic Director Beth Fowler assisted by Miranda Simek and Tamera Newquist.
The production includes beautiful costuming, large gift boxes containing life size dolls, a lighted swan-like sleigh that carries Clara on her enchanted journey and special effects such as falling snow and a magical growing Christmas tree.
Stage props were designed and constructed by Bob Fowler. Costume coordinator is Madlyn Steffey. Volunteer coordinator is Britni Michael.
