When it comes to home theater, many people overestimate the importance of a big screen and underestimate the importance of high-quality sound. What they don’t realize is that surround sound actually contributes more to overall enjoyment of the movie or sporting event than having a giant screen to watch it on. Even with smaller television sets in the living room or a bedroom, having surround sound helps you hear the dialog perfectly while still enjoying music and other sounds at a normal level.
Equipment You Need to Have Surround Sound Quality in Your Home Theater, Living Room, or Bedroom

To enhance the sound quality of music and programs at your home, you’ll need the following equipment:
- Blu-Ray Disc Player: This is the source device where you listen to your music and programming through speakers. The advantage of choosing a blu-ray disc player over a traditional DVD player is that they are equipped to handle DVD-audio and super audio CD, also known as SACD discs.
- An Audio-Video Receiver: Next, you will need an audio-video receiver (AVR) and attach it to the blu-ray disc player. You also need to connect to six to eight RCA-style analog audio cables or a high-speed HDMI cable, depending on the quality of your blu-ray player’s decoding capabilities and digital-to-analog converters.
- Loudspeakers: This is the piece of equipment that allows you to truly experience your chosen form of media. You have numerous options, ranging from small satellite speakers to freestanding floor towers. When choosing speakers, it’s important to consider the layout of the room and how the speakers fit into it aesthetically.
If you currently rely on a soundbar in your home theater, you don’t know what you’re missing.
