Sycamore Park District puts the MORE in Sycamore and, through its annual Park Partners Award, recognizes volunteers who put the MORE in Sycamore parks. Many individuals, businesses and organizations in the community go above and beyond in their support of or contribution to the Sycamore Park District. The Board of Commissioners is honored to announce that it nominates Tom Doty of Doty and Sons Concrete as the 2016 Park Partners Award recipient.
While Tom has been a long-time Park District supporter, in 2016 he became an integral part of the team through his involvement with planning and development of the ACTION 2020 recreation campus projects as well as the District’s Leaf a Legacy Fundraising campaign. Board member, Bill Kroeger says, “The Board’s decision to honor Tom was unanimous. We are happy to have him as part of the Park District and the community. Tom represents what the city is made of – people like him are the soul of Sycamore.”
As a member of the ACTION 2020 Professional Services Committee as well as the Community Center Advisory Committee, Tom spent a lot of time researching comparable facilities, reviewing bid documents and attending meetings. His dedication and expertise helped ensure each groups’ work was well informed and conducted in the best interest of the community. Michelle Schulz, Board Vice President and Chair of the Community Center Advisory Committee says, “Tom dedicated a lot of time to these committees and we are lucky to have him. He always thought of things others didn’t!”
When the Community Center Committee was asked to help raise funds towards the Leaf a Legacy fundraising campaign, Tom’s positive, willing attitude set a great example for others. He secured a $100,000 donation and pledged that Doty and Sons would contribute concrete features for the new recreation campus.
Prior to 2016, Tom served on the District’s twenty-one-member Community-wide Strategic Planning Team that, nearly four years ago, laid the groundwork for what the District has become, today. Over the years, Doty and Sons Concrete has donated many planters, benches and bean bag toss boards to the District. And in 2016, Tom and his brother Sam donated a beautiful outdoor ping pong table in honor of their father.
Tom will continue his service in 2017 as part of the Professional Services Committee which will select a firm to oversee another ACTION 2020 project – Golf Course Irrigation System replacement.
