At 4:15 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12th, 2013, Northern Illinois University Police arrested an NIU student for unlawful possession of firearms after responding to a tip and finding weapons in the student’s residence hall room. NIU Police indicate there is no threat to the campus community.
University officials have banned the student from the campus as a result of the incident pending completion of a judicial review process.
NIU Police Chief Thomas Phillips said, “Firearms or weapons of any kind have no place on a college campus.”
The NIU community is reminded the NIU is a weapons and firearms free campus. The university’s concealed carry policy prohibits weapons and firearms at the NIU campus in DeKalb; regional campuses in Hoffman Estates, Naperville and Rockford; the Lorado Taft Field campus outside Oregon, Illinois; and sites, whether owned, leased or controlled by NIU, where NIU programs, activities and classes are held. No person covered by this policy, unless authorized by law or specifically exempted by federal or state law or NIU regulation, is authorized to possess a weapon or firearm while engaged in NIU related business or activities.
Violations of this prohibition will subject persons to arrest and referral for criminal prosecution, as well as appropriate discipline up to and including expulsion from the university and/or termination from employment.
“It’s important to know that any student found to have carried a weapon or firearm onto NIU property may be subject to discipline up to and including expulsion from NIU in addition to any criminal charges that can be brought,” added Phillips.
If a person believed to be in violation of this prohibition is encountered, please call the NIU Department of Police and Public Safety at 815-753-1212.
