Just when you think Illinois politics could not get any goofier, Illinois State Senator Laura Fine from the 9th District introduces a proposed ban on gas-powered leaf blowers. Laura Fine, 9th District includes the more affluent north and northwest suburbs of Chicago.
This revised bill lists environmental and noise pollution as the primary reasons for the ban. The bill states that gas-powered leaf blowers emit exceedingly high rates of pollutants, including carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, and hydrocarbons. The bill also claims that leaf gas blowers can generate noise levels causing hearing damage in a minimal amount of time.
If this bill is signed into law, it would make use or sale of a gas-powered leaf blower illegal in the state of Illinois beginning January 1, 2022. Violators of this law would be subject to a fine up to a maximum of $500.
Local homeowners that have gas power leaf blowers may use this equipment six to eight times during the fall leaf season. Professional landscapers may use these items during the summer to clean up business sites, but also have protective gear and headphone devices.
Banning these items would create another cost item for homeowners and professional landscapers. And disposing of these items would create another landfill concern. If this law passes, what will be the next challenge, gas-powered weed trimmers, chainsaws, and lawnmowers?
Synopsis As Introduced: 415 ILCS 5/9.18 New – SB3313
Amends the Environmental Protection Act. Provides that on and after January 1, 2022, a person may not operate or sell at retail a gas-powered leaf blower in the State. Provides that a person who violates the amendatory Act’s provisions shall be subject to a civil penalty not to exceed $500. Effective immediately.
