NIU’s Supportive Professional Staff Council represents the interests and concerns of the more than 800 SPS personnel on campus as part of the university’s shared governance system.
The council, which meets from 10 a.m. to noon the second Thursday of each month, is composed of 24 representatives and 24 alternates who are elected by their peers from divisions across the campus. Council members serve two-year terms with approximately half of the members elected each year.
Council member Mark Pietrowski describes the council as “a chance for any SPS employee to come to meetings and events to learn what is happening around the university, advocate for issues and network with others. I’ve learned a tremendous amount serving on the SPS Council, and have made new friends.”
“Serving on the SPS Council has given me the opportunity to see sides of NIU I didn’t know existed,” council member Betsy Hull added.
Opportunities to learn more about the SPS Council prior to the election include:
- February Council Meeting: 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, HSC Sky Room
- Informational Open House: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, Gable Hall Learning Center
Nominations of colleagues or self-nominations for seats on the council are open from Monday, Feb. 29, through Friday, March 4. Elections are held during the first week of April.
