Kevin and Donna Hickey are the owners of the 3.5-acre property located at 12549 University Road, Shabbona, in Milan Township, containing three (3) existing farm buildings. The Hickeys would like to rent out the excess space in the buildings as a storage location for large personal vehicles and equipment, such as recreational vehicles, boats, tractors, etc. Additionally, they also wish to lease one of the buildings to a farmer for use as shop space for the storage and maintenance of his equipment. However, the property is zoned A-1, Agricultural District, and the use of the buildings for a storage business is a Special Use in that District. In order for the business to operate on the property, a Special Use Permit must be granted by the DeKalb County Board. Before the Board can grant a Special Use
Permit, a public hearing must be held before the DeKalb County Hearing Officer.
