Uncovered after a computer hack of Sony, Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams made news headlines because they made less money than Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper for their roles in the movie American Hustle. If a famous, high-profile Hollywood actress like Jennifer Lawrence made less money than her male counterparts, what happens to not-so-famous women in the workplace in regards to pay? With more women in the workforce compared to previous decades, a pay disparity for women affects families and the economy in general.
Equal Means Equal is an unflinching look at how women are treated in the United States today. By following both real life stories and precedent setting legal cases, director Kamala Lopez discovers how outdated and discriminatory attitudes inform and influence seemingly disparate issues, from workplace matters to domestic violence, rape and sexual assault to the foster care system, the healthcare system and the legal system.
