The communication age has allowed us to connect with others across the globe in ways never before possible. We can tweet, email, text, Skype, IM and even share virtual lives instantly. Digital dialogue has never been so easy — or fast!
All wonderful, yes, but there’s something to be said for gathering with family and friends at the dinner table, sharing the day’s events, pausing to appreciate the simple act of preparing and enjoying food — cell phones off, please.
Enter Slow Food.
What better cause to build a movement around than food, especially when it’s locally produced, environmentally sustainable and shared with family and friends.
Slow Food emerged as a concept in the 1980’s when an Italian, Carlo Patrini, established the movement to protest the opening of a McDonald’s restaurant near the Spanish Steps in Rome. For many, the very idea of the fast food giant sharing hallowed ground with a national landmark was equivalent to heresy.
This single act of protest sparked the creation of the Slow Food organization which has since established roots in more than 132 countries, including the U.S. Its mission is to preserve a way of life that “…links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment.”
So how does the Slow Food movement impact our daily lives?
Well, for starters, the underlying principles of the Slow Food organization include having a more intimate relationship with our food, understanding where it comes from and how our buying decisions have a direct impact our health, our community, our way of life.
For example, shopping locally and selecting fresh, whole foods in season helps support local businesses — and hence our community infrastructure — while affording us better quality food and nutritional balance. The very nature of this process suggests that we take the time to become more mindful and selective in our choices.
This same mindfulness can be translated to the kitchen. Every aspect of making food — from selection and preparation to how it is served and enjoyed — becomes part of a Slow Food way of life.
