According to details for NASA, this particular full moon is called the Harvest Moon because it’s the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. The autumnal equinox occurs on September 23rd at 3:50 a.m., marking the metrological end of summer, and the start of the fall season.
According to the Farmers Almanac, the Harvest Moon is said to symbolize the time of year when farmers would need to start harvesting the fields and gathering the food to prepare for the lean and cold winter months
The days before and after offer unique colored nearly full moons. NASA suggests the best time to watch the Harvest Moon is Saturday, September 14 at 11:33 PM Central Daylight Time.
Local astronomy clubs and the Adler Planetarium will be offering special viewing of this special event.
