Fire Department units were dispatched to Interstate 88 for a report of a semi tractor-trailer on fire on Tuesday, May 1st at approximately 1:44pm. On arrival, units found a semi tractor-trailer fully involved in a fire. The semi tractor-trailer was carrying plastic and glass items, in addition there was no hazardous materials on this load. The semi fire then extended to the brush and grass on the North side of I-88.
Additional resource from the DeKalb Fire Department were requested and a MABAS Box Alarm was dispatched. This box alarm brought in additional resources from neighboring fire departments in Cortland, Elburn, Genoa-Kingston, Hinckley, Malta, Maple Park, Rochelle, Sycamore, Shabbona and Waterman Fire Departments, to assist in fighting both fires. The brush fire was never in a a position to threaten any structures or infrastructure. The brush fire consumed approximately 40 acres of brush and grass. No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred.
