Due to the overwhelming response to the April collection event, the DeKalb County Health Department Solid Waste Program is partnering with DC Trash to hold a follow up cathode ray tube (CRT) Television collection for DeKalb County residents. “While we do not believe the program can recycle all remaining TVs in the County this year due to the cost, we want to provide residents with another opportunity after having to turn people away last month” said Jane Lux, Public Health Administrator. Lux added that the department anticipates holding another event next year for those that still have old TVs to recycle.
The free Solid Waste Program follow up collection will take place at DC Trash, located at 14438 E. North Avenue, Cortland, Il. The number of TVs collected will be limited to approximately 1300. The dates and times for collection are: Thursday and Friday, May 26 and 27 from 11 am to 7 pm, and Saturday, May 28, from 8 am to 1 pm. Phone Reservations are required, and we appreciate the public’s patience, as we anticipate a high volume of calls.
FOR RESERVATIONS, call the Solid Waste Program at 815-748-2484 starting Monday, May 16, 2016 at 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. Reservations will continue 8:30 am to 4:00 pm throughout the week if openings remain, and will be taken until capacity is full.
The Health Department and DC Trash request that residents follow these guidelines:
• Limit of 2 TVs per reservation
• FOR RESERVATIONS, call 815-748-2484 only; no other number will take reservations
• If you bring another resident’s TV, they must have made a reservation
• Those with additional TVs will have the option to pay cash to DC Trash or keep the TV(s)
• The collection is by RESERVATION only
• Participants must be DeKalb County residents and must provide their address
• No drive-ups and no dumping allowed (the facility will be patrolled)
After we have met our limit at this collection, Michelle Gibson, Solid Waste Specialist, said there will be another option available. As a recycling partner, DC Trash has reduced the cost to recycle TVs. “It is $20 for TVs under 19 inches and $30 for those over 19 inches, and customers will receive a voucher for the same amount off of rental of a roll off dumpster” said Gibson. She added that customers can pay to recycle their TVs at DC Trash during their business hours at the customer’s convenience. This option is currently available to the public.
According to Dan Christensen, owner of DC Trash, the TVs that are collected are recycled in the United States. “We want to thank the public for their patience in dealing with a state and nation-wide recycling challenge” said Gibson.
