Residents of Cortland Township who are registered voters (Electors) should attend a Special Meeting of the Cortland Township Electors tonight (January 31, 2013). The meeting is at the Township headquarters at 14 South Prairie Street in Cortland. It begins at 7pm.
Cortland Township Electors will decide the direction its Board will take to execute the corporate powers authorized in the Illinois Township Code (60 ILCS 1/30-120 ) to prevent Waste Management of Illinois from expanding the landfill to accept more than 2,000 tons of garbage from across northern Illinois. Tonight’s meeting to give the Cortland Board of Trustees direction to enforce the Electors’ denial of Waste Management’s landfill expansion application is authorized by 60 ILCS 1/30‑25 which states in its entirety:Exercise of corporate powers. The electors may take all necessary measures and give directions for the exercise of their corporate powers.

On May 18, 2010 the Cortland Township Electors rejected the expansion as allowed under state statutes and the Illinois Township Code (60 ILCS 1/30-120):
Garbage. The electors may prevent the deposit of night soil, garbage, or other offensive substances within the limits of the township. This Section does apply to refuse disposal facilities regulated by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the county in which the facilities are located.
