NIU is partnering with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to present Hunger Action Month to the campus community this September.
Hunger Action Month is a nationwide campaign created by Feeding America to mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger. The campaign brings greater attention to hunger in the United States and promotes ways for people everywhere to get involved in the movement.
The goal of the month is to “Turn NIU Orange for Hunger Relief” during the month of September, offering the NIU community a variety of educational, service-based and reflective programs that focus on food security.
According to Feeding America, the nearly 49 million people in America who struggle with hunger often do so in silence. They live in every community; they are neighbors, co-workers and friends; yet their struggles can go unheard. Participants in Hunger Action Month can make such a significant difference in the lives of neighbors in need.
Events throughout the month will focus on the issue of hunger and food security on a global, national, local and hyper-local scale. Programs include a hunger-themed brown-bag lunch series at noon every Wednesday in the Blackhawk dining room of the Holmes Student Center, volunteer opportunities with NIU Communiversity Gardens, a cooking demonstration in the MLK Commons and food drive Friday, Sept. 25, at the NIU women’s soccer game.
To close the month, a panel discussion is planned at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, with the executive director of the NIFB as well as local members of the DeKalb community and NIU faculty who are deeply involved in research and hunger-related initiatives. The event takes place in Room 101 of Wirtz Hall.
