Appliances can quickly become stained with food spills, fingerprints, rust, and more. However, taking just a few minutes weekly or monthly to clean your appliances means you won’t have to do major scrubbing later. A dab of lemon juice or baby oil, vinegar, and water get your appliances just as clean as solutions you buy at the store. Here are some tips to keep your most-used appliances clean:
- Stovetop: You probably spatter food every time you use the stove. If you don’t wipe it off right away, it becomes caked on and unsightly. To remove food drippings, use a clean cloth and commercial stove cleaner. You may need to remove parts and clean them individually for more severe staining.
- Microwave: Your microwave tends to have even more spatter and caked-on food spills than your stove. One proven method of cleaning the microwave is to place a damp wash cloth in it for three minutes and turn on the power. This loosens the food so it’s easier for you to remove it with a cloth and homemade cleaning solution. Be sure to clean with warm soapy water.
- Dishwasher: The device that cleans your dishes needs regular cleaning itself. At least once a month, pour vinegar in the detergent drawer and run a cycle without dishes. This helps to break up deposits of hard water and dispel unpleasant odors. Don’t forget to wipe down the water steam openings once the dishwasher has completed its cycle.
- Garbage disposal: To eliminate odor here, pour one tablespoon of baking soda and a quarter-cup of vinegar down the drain. Rinse the mixture 15 to 20 minutes later.
- Washing machine: You can repeat a similar process with your washing machine as you do with your dishwasher to get rid of odor. Place a capful of vinegar or a scoop of powdered dishwasher detergent where the laundry detergent normally goes and run an empty load.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how much these easy fixes simplify your life.
