Tribal Council Secretary Camilla Chouteau and Council Member Thomas Wabnum traveled to Shabbona, Ill. in early November to present a $5,000 donation on behalf of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation (PBPN) to the Flewellin Memorial Library. The donation will support the non-fiction collection as well as youth programs at the library.
The president and top officers of the Flewellin Memorial Library board met with Chouteau and Wabnum to personally thank the nation for the generous donation explaining how important it is to their library and discuss their support for the PBPN’s economic development efforts in Shabbona.
“You have been great neighbors,” the president of the library, David Highland, told Chouteau and Wabnum, “It means a lot to the library.”
Chouteau and Wabnum had a warm conversation with the board members and library director Janet Clark about the history of the Potawatomi people in Shabbona, the PBP Nation’s commitment to educating young people and the vital role education plays in connecting our cultures and encouraging understanding of each other. The tribal council representatives toured the library and discussed the Nation’s ongoing support for the library and all of our neighbors in Shabbona. After the library visit, Chouteau and Wabnum attended the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp. annual dinner. The PBPN was a sponsor of the event and invited Shabbona Mayor Claudia Hicks and local restaurant owners and longtime supporters Denny and Kathy Sands as personal guests.
