National Bologna Day honors an interesting type of sausage that originates from Bologna, Italy. Bologna or Baloney is generally made of pork, which is very similar to the Italian mortadella.
Bologna sausage (sometimes also spelled as baloney, boloney, or polony) is a kind of sausage derived from the Italian mortadella Bologna. It is a finely ground pork sausage that contains lard. Some Bologna can also consist of a combination chicken, beef or other meats.
For many mature adults, Bologna sandwiches were the mainstay of lunch meals growing up. Served with mustard on white bread, you were special if your Mom added a slice of pasteurized cheese. On select meals, fried Bologna was a special treat (like for breakfast with eggs).
Although primarily an American and Canadian delicacy, there’s also German bologna and Lebanon bologna, which are distinctly different. There’s even something called polony, which is popular in South Africa.
Of course, it’s important to eat healthily, but some days you just have to indulge in a guilty pleasure and say, “Baloney, today I am going to have a Bologna sandwich.”
And where better to do that than Plano-Sandwich, IL?
