This Memorial Day will be very different for many American Legion Honor Guard members this year. This day in DeKalb for years has been celebrated with a parade and presentation by civic leaders and DeKalb American Legion Honor Guard members at the Ellwood Mansion in Downtown DeKalb. These events have been canceled for 2020 but other virtual and social media posts will honor the meaning of Memorial Day.
To honor the members of the DeKalb American Legion Post 66 Honor Guard, local Papa John’s Pizza (DeKalb) owner Ryan Schroeder has graciously donated one large Pizza to each of the 30 members of the DeKalb AL Honor Guard. “I am so impressed with the efforts of these people and I felt it important to acknowledge these members in some small way,” said Schroeder. “We continue to support the “DeKalb Hometown Hero” banner program that acknowledges just a few of our DeKalb ‘American’ heroes.”
The Legion members who answer the call to honor include the old and young, male and female, veterans of all branches, active, National Guard, reserves, and Auxiliary members. They are of the same diverse character as those they honor. Members of the honor guard are trained in military drill and ceremonies, and provide memorial honors, upon request, at the funerals of eligible veterans. They volunteer their time to make sure all deceased veterans are given a proper and respectful departure.
