North Grove School Days will feature a look at the “home front” efforts during WWII. Other attractions are tours of the school, live music, farm animals, craft demonstrations, schoolyard games, a raffle and bake sale. A hot dog lunch will be available on Saturday and root beer floats can be purchased on Sunday. A presentation on WWII “Victory Gardens” will be given at 1:30 each day.
Old North Grove School, built in 1878 by Swedish immigrants and used as rural school until 1952 is the last remaining one room country school on its original site in DeKalb County. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the decades of its use, the students of North Grove School experienced the events of their time including two World Wars.
During WWII, U.S. citizens were required to ration certain items such as sugar and gasoline. The scarcity of many ordinary things was a part of life. School children joined in the effort by collecting paper and metals and patriotism was in full swing.
Bring the kids out for a fun and educational trip to see an authentic old one-room schoolhouse used in this very area. Old North Grove School is located at 26745 Brickville Road in Sycamore, IL. For more information see www.northgroveschool.org.
