Officer Involved Shooting

Today, January 28^th, 2014, at approximately 11:48 am, DeKalb Police were dispatched to a Check for Wellbeing call at a residence on High Pointe Drive on the city’s south side.  The preliminary investigation has revealed that while responding to the scene Officers were advised that during a follow-up phone call to the complainant, Charlotte Lupton, telecommunicators could hear a disturbance taking place at her residence located at 1020 Quail Run.  Upon arriving on scene, DeKalb Police Officers and a Northern Illinois University Police Officer made the initial entry moving toward the sound of the disturbance inside the single family home located at 1020 Quail Run.  Officers encountered the suspect, who was actively engaged in an attack on his family members with a knife, ultimately a DeKalb Police Officer terminated the threat, shooting the knife wielding offender.

DeKalb Fire/Rescue and NIU Police Paramedic units also responded to the residence where Carl Lupton (57) and his wife Charlotte Lupton (67) were treated at the scene suffering from multiple stab wounds and were immediately transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital.  At present, both victims have survived the attack and have cooperated with the initial police investigation.  The offender, Cameron D. Lupton (28) of Malta, IL, was deceased at the scene.  The scene was secured, an investigation is in progress, and the Illinois State Police have responded to conduct an independent investigation regarding the use of deadly force in this incident.  The DeKalb Police are cooperating with the other investigating authorities to make a fact based determination of the chain of events that occurred at 1020 Quail Run on this date.

This situation does not present a further threat to the community and our preliminary inquiry indicates that all of the personnel who were involved in this tragic situation responded in a professional and courageous manner that saved two innocent lives that otherwise would have been lost. Further information in regard to this incident will be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.
