Northern Illinois University head coaches and members of the athletics staff will hit the road for four days, beginning in Rockford, for the Huskie Summer Circuit, which brings NIU Athletics to fans and alumni throughout the region. The circuit, which made its debut in 2014, begins at at Franchesco’s, 7182 Spring Creek Road, in Rockford on Monday, June 1.
With more than 14,000 alumni in the Rockford area, about 1,500 current students from the Rockford area that attend classes on the NIU main DeKalb campus each year and about 2,000 students enrolled in classes at NIU-Rockford or online each year, the region is fertile ground for Huskie fans.
In addition to athletics support, Rockford is home to NIU’s first and only regional engagement office, dedicating a full-time staff to linking the university’s resources and expertise with those of the community to address local challenges and maximize opportunities. In partnership with Rockford area business, government and civic leaders, Rockford engagement staff pursue an ambitious set of goals aligned with the goals of the community.
Each stop on the Huskie Summer Circuit will have music, appetizers, a cash bar and a raffle for great prizes like tickets to NIU sporting events, Huskie apparel and more. Attendees will hear from NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier and the head coaches from each of the Huskies’ 17 sports programs, including football’s Rod Carey, Mark Montgomery of men’s basketball and volleyball coach Ray Gooden. Information on purchasing football and volleyball season tickets and becoming a donor to the Huskie Athletic Fund will be available.
After the June 1 Rockford event, the summer circuit heads to Chicago (June 2, Joe’s Bar on Weed St.) and Aurora (June 3, Two Brothers Roundhouse), with an added stop June 4 at Chandler’s in Schaumburg for the convenience of Huskie fans in the northern suburbs.
