New Look for Sycamore Library

Now that the construction dust has settled, it’s time to hit the books again. Sharp Architects Inc. would like to invite the public to enjoy and celebrate the completion of their latest project, the remodeling of the Sycamore Public Library.  An Open House will be held there this Sunday, October 14th from 1:00 to 5:00pm, with a ribbon cutting ceremony taking place at 1:00pm.  There will be refreshments, face painting, balloon animals, and more fun activities for both adults and children.

Lisa Sharp, owner and principal of Sharp Architects, was originally approached by Sarah Tobias, the Director of the Library, in 2010 to address long-standing water infiltration and building envelope issues. They quickly developed an excellent working relationship,  and in time she was eventually tasked with designing a remodel of the 28,341 square foot building.  Swedberg and Associates, whom had assisted with the water infiltration work, were chosen as the Construction Manager for the project. Design work began in 2011 and the project broke ground in March of 2012.

Children’s, Youth, and Young Adult sections were each greatly expanded and partnered with adjacent corresponding offices for ease of direct staff supervision, and overall the Library was given a new, fresh, and vibrant interior palette.  One of the other major operational complaints of the existing building was the placement of the circulation desk upstairs, so the circulation process was moved downstairs and given ample working space.  The existing upstairs circulation desk was replaced by a new adult services desk adjacent to a re-worked administrative wing.  All of these changes will allow the library to operate in a more efficient and effective manor, better serve the community, and provide a more pleasing space within to select and read books for children and adults alike.  For more information on this project as well as others, visit www.sharparchitects.com
