National Mutt Day encourages us to embrace, save and celebrate mixed breed dogs twice a year on December 2nd and July 31st.
Desperately longing for a new forever home, millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs in shelters across the United States are waiting for someone to come and adopt them. National Mutt Day provides an excellent opportunity to find the perfect canine companion. Despite the name, a mutt learns, obeys and trains much like purebred animals. While their lineage cannot be traced and their features are a bit murky, their companionship will be faithful.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Visit your local shelter; if you are unable to adopt a dog, you can always volunteer. Post on social media using #NationalMuttDay and encourage others to join in. In DeKalb County please visit Tails Human Society and see if there is a pet that would offer you unconditional love. They are always seeking volunteers to walk dogs and also to sit with the cats so they continue to have human contact. Visit Tails at 2250 Barber Greene Road, DeKalb, IL 60115.
HOLIDAY ADOPTION
If your family has a pet on their Holiday List, please make sure you have the right environment to bring a pet into your home. The cost of a pet goes being simply bringing it home; it includes the maintenance cost of keeping your pet healthy.
HISTORY
Celebrity Pet Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, founded National Mutt Day in 2005. This day is celebrated on both December 2 and July 31 of each year. It is also an unofficial holiday that proclaims that these dogs are as special as their pure-bred counterparts and should be afforded the same love, affection, and respect.
GIFTS
With the holiday approaching, finding that perfect pet gift is important. Americans spent a record $56 Billion on Pets last year.
Other spending included $14.37 billion for veterinary care; $13.14 billion for supplies and over-the-counter medicines; $2.23 billion for live animal purchases; and $4.41 billion for other services. If you are looking to purchase a pet gift for a friend’s pet, please check with the pet’s human to make sure the food or gift item (toy) is what the owner and their pet can use.
If you want something special, please visit Huckleberry’s Pet Parlor, located at 423 N Main St, Sycamore, IL 60178.
No bones about it, Huckleberry’s Pet Parlor is DeKalb County’s premier pet center.
