The Duck Soup Community Food Coop and the DeKalb County Community Gardens have joined to host a Community Farmers’ Market this Friday June 20th, 2014, from 5pm to 8pm, in the parking lot of the coop, located at 129 East Hillcrest in DeKalb. The market will offer a variety of locally grown vegetables, local artists, musicians, and other vendors.
“It will be a great community event that offers something for everyone.” said Michaela Holtz, Duck Soup Cooperative treasurer.
The Duck Soup Food Cooperative is DeKalb County’s only community owned grocery store. It offers a wide variety of produce, bulk foods, dairy, and health oriented products. The coop is open to all, you do not have to be a member to shop at the Duck Soup.
The Duck Soup is owned by its nearly 200 members, and is operated in keeping with the Seven Cooperative Principles:
Voluntary and open membership
Democratic Member Control
Member Economic Participation
Autonomy and Independence
Education, Training, and Information
Cooperation among cooperatives
Concern for the Community
For over 25 years the Duck Soup cooperative has been providing a healthy food alternative and a community based economic model for DeKalb County.
DeKalb County Community Gardens is a local non-profit in its third year. The DCCG works to strengthen access to fresh, local sustainably grown organic food for people in need. It has over 40 locations around the County, and offers an innovative approach to ending food insecurity in DeKalb County. Last year DCCG raised and donated over 16,000 pounds of fresh organically grown vegetables to food pantries, Feed’em Soup, Voluntary Action Center, Meals on Wheels, senior citizen centers and living facilities, and more.
“We are partnering with Duck Soup Cooperative because we have shared values about the importance of fresh, locally grown food, and a concern for the community. We are a natural fit for partnership,” said Dan Kenney, executive director of DeKalb County Community Gardens.
Other markets are scheduled for Friday July 11th, August 8th, September 12th, and October 10th. For information about the markets, or to be a vendor at the markets contact Michaela Holtz at Michaela.friedrichova@gmail.com
