Show your appreciation for the U.S. men and women who died while in the military service by attending Memorial Day events around DeKalb County this coming weekend.
Come out and help celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Northern Illinois Memorial in Kirkland at 1pm on Sunday, May 29th. The Marine Corp. League and the Boy Scouts will be present. Cash awards given to 3 students. As in past years, food will be available on site. The Northern Illinois Memorial is located at the corner of South St. & Third St., in Kirkland.
Memorial Day starts out early with the 2011 Mayors’ Memorial Day Breakfast from 6:45am-8:00am on Monday, May 30th. The breakfast will be held at the Carls Fargo Restaurant, 335 W. State St. in Sycamore. The cost is $10.00 to pay at the door. To RSVP and pay only $8.00, email ffb66@juno.com and a form will be sent back to you. This is a great way to start Memorial Day off before going to the ceremonies around the County.
There will be a Military VIP Motorcycle Escort for LTC David A. Dosier starting at 8am in Sycamore, going to the Joiner Cemetery. Services at the Joiner Cemetery will be at 8:15am.
In DeKalb, the Memorial Day activities start out at 8:30am with a Memorial Tank Service at the corner of North First Street & Lincoln Highway. At 9am the DeKalb Memorial Day Parade steps off at North Third Street and Lincoln Hwy. For more information on the parade, contact Patti McAdams in the DeKalb City Manager’s office, 815-748-2090. The Parade will end at the Ellwood House at 9:30am where their Memorial Day Program will include a brief address by a Military guest speaker; a Roll Call of Fallen Illinois Service Members; American Legion School Awards; as well as musical selections by the Good News Quartet, DeKalb High School, Clinton Rosette and Huntley Middle School Marching Bands.
Ellwood House tours will be offered from 10:00am to 12:00 noon free of charge. Groups will be led by a docent though the mansion. There are a maximum number of visitors allowed in a group, so there may be a slight wait as we try to accommodate all who wish to tour the mansion. Additional parking is available at the First Congregational Church at 615 N. First Street.
The Malta Memorial Day Service will begin at 10am on Monday at the Malta United Methodist Church, S. Third and Sprague Streets. Lt. Col. David Dosier will be the guest speaker and special music will be included in the program. Veterans of the community are invited to pay tribute to those who have fought in all of the nation’s wars, by marching as a unit from the church to Malta Township Library, where a wreath will be dedicated. Any veteran wanting to participate is asked to meet at the church by 9:30am. Flags will be handed out to children at the close of the service for those wanting to march to the library.
